Public Access: No, available for scientific study by permission only.

Decription and History:

In December of 2001, this property was protected by the landowners by their donation of a conservation easement over 22 acres of undeveloped land on Range Road in Cumberland. The parcel is located immediately across the Road from the Sunrise Acres Farm and behind the Berkovich residence.

The plants on the parcel consist of primarily mixed hardwood and softwood communities. The northern end of the property borders on a large field area. The land also includes several steeply sided hills that are remnants of the past courses of the nearby stream. It also has a significant area of bottomlands with forested and grassy wetlands. The tree stands have been managed over the years and range from dense young forests to older open woods. The property also includes a small field with herbaceaous plants and an old borrow pit. The back quarter of the property follows Mill Brook, a tributary of the East Branch of the Piscatqua River. The land drops steeply to the brook, where a small flood plain supports a diverse array of riparian plants.

The easement ensures that the property will permanently remain largely in its current natural state. The easement does not allow for public access but ensures that the property will be available for scientific study with the permission of the family.

This property, with its varied habitat and seclusion from human use, provides a much-needed sanctuary for plant and animal life in the increasing bustle of Cumberland County.
